12,000 euros, 3,5 kilos: discover Nikon's new optical monster

Exceptional zoom, the Nikon 180-400mm f / 4 is the kind of bazooka that sports photographers use around stadiums around the world. At 12,000 euros each, find out why it's worth it ... and its weight!

Here is an exceptional perspective. As much from the point of view of the price - 12,000 euros! - that the size: with its 3.5 kg on the scale and its almost 40 cm in length, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f / 4E TC1.4 FL ED VR is a beast. And destined for a very particular population: if the animal photographers can appreciate it (although it is a little "short" for the most savage cattle), it targets especially the sports photoreporters, these "hunters" of action which border the stadiums and must capture the moment to 1 / 2000th of a second before sending the image in near real time to threads and writing around the world.

To talk about this optics, we opened our microphone to Nicolas Gillet, the product manager at Nikon, but also to Aurélien Meunier, a Getty photojournalist accustomed to stadiums who gives us his first impressions on the new "Rolls" telephoto zooms top of the line. In short: it is with this kind of jewel, as good as reliable, that professionals like him manage to produce such images.

Compared to the previous generation - the famous 200-400 mm - what surprised us most is that despite a wider optical range of 20 mm and the integration of a teleconverter x1.4 to 8 lenses directly in the barrel of the lens, this extraordinary zoom weighs the same weight as the previous generation.

Who said there were no major innovations in optics?
