A North Korean malware on the Google Play Store

North Korean developers have managed to extract personal data from users through apps on the Play Store.

The Play Store is never safe from malware. It happens quite regularly that the Google store hosts applications affected by a virus or malicious malicious software. McAfee, security specialist, discovered that a team of North Korean developers would be the source of three apps for the least problematic. These would have the sole purpose of tracking the deserters of the dictatorship around the world.

Their technique consists of offering victims the opportunity to preview applications that have not yet been launched. To catch their prey, they make calls on Facebook. The software then collects the SMS, the photos as well as the contacts of the user. This personal data could be collected through Dropbox or Yandex.

Hackers, better known as the Sun Team, would not be their first attempt. But for the very first time, they managed to infiltrate the Play Store. However, there is no evidence yet that the North Korean authorities are hiding behind this subterfuge. McAfee does not believe that this campaign is related to Lazarus, the group supported by the government including the hacks of Sony Pictures. Nevertheless, this find remains worrying and reveals that despite all the precautions taken, you could be a victim of political considerations. Fortunately, the applications are no longer available.
