Twitter calls 330 million users to change their password

As a result of a computer bug, the passwords initially stored in encrypted form were found written in plain text on an internal file. Result: All users are prompted to change their password.

This is a small bug that could cause many problems: Twitter calls its 330 million users to change their password. The reason for this alert is a bug in the management of password storage, as explained by the technical manager of the company, Parag Agrawal. In theory, passwords are stored encrypted on servers, but a bug caused "storage of these passwords in clear on an internal log file." According to Mr Agrawal, "The bug is fixed and our investigation shows no attempt to intrude or misuse (log file, ndr) by anyone."

Nevertheless, Twitter does not want to take any risk and invites, upon the return of a user on mobile or computer, to change his password. A logical gesture on the part of a company that has been pinned all its short life on security problems: storage of clear-word passwords in the beginning, but also massive account piracy, exploits via third-party connected applications, etc. .
To increase security, Twitter offers a simple step-by-step solution for most services:


1. Change your password and that of any other site / service that uses the same

2. Use a strong password that you would not use anywhere else

3. Enable two-step verification

4 Use password management software to use strong passwords for all your services

For this last point, however, be aware that the hacking of the master password leads to the hacking of all your passwords!
