Apple would prepare a VR and AR headset with 8K resolution for each eye
No cable or external sensors, Apple's headset project would focus on ease of use and image quality. The launch would be scheduled for 2020.
The Cupertino company will, it seems, embark on the battle of the AR / VR helmets. According to Cnet, the company is currently working on such a device that could be used in both virtual reality and augmented reality. Scheduled for launch in 2020, this headset would focus on image quality, providing 8K resolution for each eye. This could perhaps solve the problem of pixelization that we usually have with this type of product.
Apple's future headset - codenamed T288 - would also have no annoying cable that would impede the user's movement. It would come with a dedicated station that would carry all the intelligence related to image processing and to which it would connect through a high-speed wireless technology, probably WiGig. As such, this station would ship a new Apple processor that would be more powerful than all previous known models.
Another remarkable difference of the T288 project. The user would not need to install sensors around him for motion detection. The helmet and the station would integrate all the necessary technology. Again, it would be a wise choice because the installation of these sensors in a living room is not always easy.
A market still very uncertain
In fact, it's been a few years that Apple is interested in the comfort of use of AR / VR helmets. The computer giant filed a patent in February 2017 to produce less bulky and lighter devices, thanks to a catadioptic system that combines lenses and mirrors.
The fact that Apple is launching into virtual reality is rather a surprise. So far, the supplier has focused on augmented reality as part of its ARKit platform. This is a path that Microsoft also prefers to explore with its HoloLens product. Headphones with full immersion - as proposed by Oculus, Google, HTC and Samsung - have so far hard to convince users. The virtual environment is still too pixelated to be really nice to use. And in addition, these devices often cause nausea. Will Apple manage to make a difference in this market? Nothing is less sure. Moreover, nothing says that this project will really come to the end.
