We tested the Nuraphone, the headset that fits your hearing

The Nuraphone is an innovative model both for its sound customization system and the design of its headphones. Is it enough to make a difference?

How to offer the best possible sound for headphones? The Australian company Nura have tackled this thorny problem and have designed a revolutionary model: the Nuraphone, sold about 400 euros.

This helmet is distinguished by its design that combines the circum-auricular and the intra-auricular. The inside of the earpiece has a tip that is placed at the entrance of the ear canal to transmit the sound more directly than with conventional supra or circumauricular models.

According to the manufacturer, the tip penetrates less into the duct than the in-ear headphones, which explains the unique size. We would have liked the choice between several sizes and people who do not like the headphones may not like this model either.
Another potential problem often related to ear-phones, the restitution of the bass. To avoid this problem, Nura placed a transducer in the circum-auricular part that encompasses the ear. Thus, the bass are at the rendezvous. Nura goes even further by adding a haptic feedback that gives the impression of feeling them, as if the headset had a mini subwoofer.
Another advantage of this double design, the Nuraphone offers a very good insulation from the outside, even if it does not equal what can offer Bose with its active noise reduction system. Finally, the helmet is a little heavy (324 g), but is robust and comfortable.

The app calibrates the helmet according to your hearing

The other advantage of Nuraphone is to offer a totally personalized sound depending on the morphology of your ears. For this, you must connect the Bluetooth headset to your smartphone or tablet and download the app nura for iOS or Android, alas in English. You have no choice because the headphones sends an audio message forcing this operation when first used.
The app guides you step by step to position the headphones on your head (do not be wrong because the left / right mentions are missing). Then it proceeds to a calibration phase that lasts about a minute. This phase consists in sending certain frequencies and in "listening" how the ear responds by a vibration of the cochlea (acoustic Otoemissions). The sound resulting from this vibration is certainly very small but can be picked up by a microphone placed in the earpiece.

Once the calibration is complete, the app displays the profile in a pretty visual form but difficult to understand because it must be unrolled to see the sensitivity of the ear according to the different frequencies.

But where the Nuraphone reveals all its power is when the app allows to go from a "generic" audio profile (before calibration) to the custom profile.

With the generic profile, the sound is desperately flat. By activating the personalized profile, the quality is really at the rendezvous with a very good restitution of different frequencies, breadth and depth. Compared to the generic profile, it's day and night!

Best of all, the headset features the aptX HD codec to deliver Bluetooth audio without loss of quality, provided the mobile device is compatible.

The app can create three profiles, which can be useful if you use the headset in different environments (at home quiet, on the street, in transport). The selected profile is transferred into the headset, allowing it to be used without the need for the app. The latter also gives access to the setting of the haptic feedback (Immersion mode), for more or less strong bass, and the configuration of the touch button placed at the end of each earpiece.

No on / off button

These buttons are certainly practical but do not look for a key on / off, there is none!

Nura opts for a capacitive sensor placed in the right earpiece that detects if the headset is placed on the user's head to turn it on. We also regret the absence of diodes to indicate that the headset is turned on, as well as the status of the battery (you have to go see it on the app).

Only one cable provided

The Nuraphone is designed to be used mainly in Bluetooth, which explains that it comes with a single USB cable, which is used to recharge the battery (the manufacturer announces a range of between 15 and 20 hours). But it is also possible to connect the headset to a computer. The sound is then digitally transmitted to the headset which has its own DAC (digital to analog converter). This is especially useful when the sound card of the computer is of poor quality. However, do not lose the cable because it has a proprietary connector to connect to the Nuraphone.

The manufacturer also delivers a quality storage cabinet, with magnetic clasp.

And if you really need a wired connection, Nura offers an optional wide range of cables (between 20 and 40 euros) that range from the classic audio jack to the Lightning connector for iPhone / iPad, via the micro USB and the USB Type-C. In wired mode, the custom profile is active but it is unfortunately not possible to use the application.

In the end, the Nuraphone keeps its promises and delivers a sound of remarkable quality, which justifies to us its price. Until a possible Nuraphone 2 corrects the few small ergonomic defects we found him.
