Ubuntu 18.04 LTS: the bionic beaver lands!
The most popular Linux distribution benefits from a major update with the arrival of its version 18.04 LTS "long-term support" for professionals looking for a reliable and stable system over time.
Bionic Beaver is "Bionic Beaver" in French: it is the code name of the new version of the Ubuntu distribution officially launched today. Stamped 18.04 LTS, this is the version "Long term support" that is to say, supported in the long term by the Ubuntu foundation. A distribution logically appreciated by experts and companies who take advantage of 5 years of bug tracking and other flaws when a "classic" Ubuntu version, only takes 9 months of follow-up because they are renewed every 6 months.
Two years after the release of the previous long-term support version, the 16.04 LTS, the foundation has therefore updated its most "pro" distribution with the ouster of the Unity desktop manager in favor of Gnome 3.28, a return to sources induced by the Ubuntu Foundation's abandonment of Unity's development last year. The Linux kernel chosen is 4.15, which is a little surprising since it is stamped "End Of Life" on the kernel.org site which references 4.16 as a current stable version.
Distribution should be as stable as possible for a long time, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS does not ship by default Wayland display engine which is already integrated in the classic versions of Ubuntu, but the very classic X. org, and this for reasons of lack of finish Wayland. It will take until 2020 and the 20.04 LTS version to see a "pro" version of Ubuntu make the technological leap in the new generation of display engine.
Aimed at a connoisseur audience and looking for stability and security, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS does not embark on a plethora of third-party software and is content with the bare minimum (Firefox 59.0.2, Free Office 6.0, etc.) in order to reduce the memory load and limit potential faults.
For this new version, the Ubuntu Foundation worked hand in hand with Microsoft to ensure that the system works best with the Hyper V virtual machine system of the US software giant. In the other direction, the system Ubuntu 18.04 LTS also has an improved virtualization system that can automatically load the ISO target systems, as specified by our colleagues in NextInpact who have already tested the new distribution.
Marginal in consumer machines, Ubuntu remains a reference distribution in the professional world (administration, etc.) thanks to its technical support. Dell offers for example Ubuntu versions of its XPS 13 to satisfy programmers but also some governments / departments / companies.
Fans of ergonomic and pure technical improvements will wait for the month of October 2018 during which a version 18.10 "general public" should see the day.
