Blade 15: Razer offers an ultra-slim portable PC for gamers

Razer is surfing the wave of slim PCs for players and launching a powerful 15-inch Nvidia-compliant Max-Q.

The world's smallest 15.6-inch notebook PC. After MSI, Asus or Gigabyte, it is Razer who draws his ultrafine player laptop, the Blade 15. This one replaces the Blade 14 in the catalog of the brand and aims to seduce both players and those who are looking for an efficient and powerful machine to work.

That's why the brand opts for a very sober black aluminum case, a 15.6-inch thin-edged screen whose back is stamped with the logo and hardware configurations that fuel the latest Intel and Nvidia technologies.

All versions of the Razer 15 will be available on the online store as you read these lines. Prices range from 1950 to 2650 euros.

No matter the price of the configuration, it is the processor Intel Core i7-8750H (six hearts) of last generation which officiates, supported by 16 GB of memory DDR4 (extensible a posteriori).

On the 3D part, the cheapest machine offers a GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q while all others enjoy the power of a GTX 1070 Max-Q. Another variable element is the amount of storage. It oscillates between 256 and 512 GB of SSD according to the models.

Let's finish with connectivity. There are three full-size USB 3.0 ports, a USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3, two video outputs (HDMI and mini DisplayPort) and a headphone jack. For surfing, Wi-Fi module is mandatory because the thickness of the machine does not allow it to adopt a wired network connector.

Beautiful, pretty thin and light

The weight and thickness vary from - respectively - 1.81 and 2.1 kg and 1.68 and 1.73 cm depending on the versions. We had a functional prototype of the machine during its presentation and we must admit that its size is closer to that of a 14-inch machine that 15.6 inches.

Strong, the black case has made a strong impression but beware, it tends to dampen fingerprints! Moreover, as usual at Razer, the finishes are exemplary and the fact that the rounded 14 inches leave room for angles a little more prominent is not displeasing to us.

Oh, a colorful keyboard

DNA gaming requires, the Blade 15 is adorned with a keyboard with separate keys and the backlight is customized to the extreme, via the home software (Synapse). Surrounded by two speakers, the set of keys is found a little compressed in the center of the plateau ... and it is not very happy.

Because, hardly the hands put on the machine, we were immediately embarrassed by this disposition. Our fingers did not fall naturally on the keys Z, Q, S, D, often used to move in video games. For a gaming machine, it bothers. To reach them, we had to slightly rotate our left hand to the inside of the keyboard, a position that can be tiring in the long run.

Nevertheless, the keyboard offers good first typing sensations and is not very noisy. The touchpad is disproportionate to our taste, but as it is doomed to be replaced by an external mouse, it does not matter.

Screen without edges

The Razer 15 follows the current trend by offering a thin-screen display whose definition will be only Full HD for France (the 4K is reserved for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Germany).

No matte coating on the program, but Razer says all windows are anti-reflective. Of the four configurations announced by Razer, the cheapest will have a slab at 60 Hz (30 ms response time) and the other three will benefit from a 144 Hz model (4 ms response time).

Advanced cooling

With a slim housing and such powerful components, Razer was forced to develop a new cooling system. The brand claims to have worked particularly well on the latter and chose a large steam chamber covering the CPU and the GPU rather than a tangle of heat pipes.

The calories collected by the copper plates and pushed to the radiators are dissipated by two fans, located on both sides of the motherboard. At our first contact with the Razer 15, they were quite noisy and we were surprised to see how much prototypes we had in hand could heat when we were playing games on it, both at the keyboard and under the machine. Let's hope that the final versions do not suffer from this (big) problem.
