Android P: Google reinvents navigation on its operating system

With the iPhone X, Apple has chosen a gestural navigation rather than virtual buttons. A decision that seems to have seduced Google, according to the announcements of the web giant at the I / O 2018. With Android P, the future version of its mobile operating system, Google will in turn adopt gestures. The three buttons on the navigation bar will disappear, giving way to a system he hopes will be more intuitive.

Different from the iPhone X

Google could have copied the operation of iOS, but preferred to imagine his own actions. Where a slide from the bottom to the top allows to close an application on iPhone X, he opens the multitasking drawer on a smartphone equipped Android P. Again, Google disrupts its interface. The cards disappear to make room for a system very similar to that of the iPhone, or we navigate from one application to another from left to right.

To access the application launcher, slide up a second time once you reach the multitasking drawer. By sliding from the left to the right on the bottom of the screen, we quickly switch from one application to another, a feature that should appeal to the most eager users.

To return to the Home screen: nothing changes. We press the logo at the bottom of the screen and the application closes. The return button, hidden most of the time, does not disappear. It only appears in applications where it may be used.

Already available in beta

In addition to this gesture navigation, Android P introduced a lot of new features such as better control of its activity, better management of autonomy or prediction in applications. We will come back to it in the next hours.

Officially available this fall, Android P can be installed in beta tonight. Note that for the first time, the test version is not limited to Nexus and Pixel smartphones and open to other manufacturers, such as OnePlus and Sony. The list of compatible devices can be found here.
