Android TV more powerful and equipped with Google Assistant: here is the update that was expected

It was time ! Google took advantage of its conference Google I / O to announce that there would soon be new on the side of Android TV. This multimedia operating system that was a little stalled will also benefit from the arrival of Android P. Last year, Google had presented the new graphical interface of Android TV. Based on Android Oreo, menu navigation was more intuitive and enjoyable. The cascade of icons on the home page gave way to much clearer navigation, including even immediate preview features for videos and descriptions in thumbnails.

However, its deployment has not been followed by manufacturers of TV and multimedia boxes. Google now encourages its developers to take ownership of this new version for several reasons.


Simplicity and performance

Now based on Android P, the Android TV operating system would be faster and easier to use. For example, setting up the TV or Android TV box via your smartphone would be even easier. If you are an Android smartphone user, as soon as the mobile detects an Android TV device in its network environment, it offers to configure it. IOS mobile users could also benefit from a similar system.

In this automatic configuration, your Google, Netflix or your camera's login and password are automatically transferred to the TV.

The procedure also makes it easy to install compatible apps that you already use on other Android devices. The goal here is to avoid you the many endless searches on the Store, frankly not practical from the remote control of your TV. With this, in a few clicks, you find your multimedia environment ready for use.


Google wants to facilitate access to the Android TV settings, but also their reading. The goal here is to minimize the number of clicks and menu breaks to access basic settings like home network management.

The company also emphasized the software optimization of Android P, which allows less powerful equipment to run the system properly. The promise is therefore to make the experience as fluid and enjoyable as possible on all types of devices, from low-cost external boxes and more only on high-end televisions equipped with a powerful processor.

Google Assistant integration

Google Assistant will also be more present in Android TV. The voice assistant will allow you to change the audio track, turn up the volume, pause a program or advance it by 30 seconds, or even control its compatible home automation products. Orders quite classic in the end, but which become very pleasant when they are integrated into a product such as the future soundbar JBL.


Presented at the Google conference, the JBL Link Bar Android TV can control the functions of the assistant on the fly with a built-in mic. No need to use the microphone of the remote, just say the command "OK Google" to control the functions of the wizard. It's exactly the same as with a Google Home speaker but the sound quality here is to sound the movies or listen to music with good power.

If the JBL Link Bar is scheduled for the summer, note that Nvidia could be among the first manufacturers to offer this new version of Android TV with an imminent update of its Shield TV boxes (probably early June).


For their part, developers can order the ADT-2 developer Device. Last April, information on this new Chromecast leaked on the net: it is currently available in limited edition for developers but it's a safe bet that a consumer version should see the light later.
