Build 2018: With Your Phone, Microsoft connects your smartphone to your PC

Your Phone, Chronology on iOS and Android, Microsoft is multiplying its technological efforts to extend the Windows Galaxy beyond the borders of the PC. He pushes it to the edge of the cloud, to conquer the IoT.

Moreover, the various interventions of the representatives of Microsoft also drew the contours of a strategy where Windows is always central, omnipresent but not necessarily in the light, as would be the heart of a galaxy extending from the cloud to its border (the edge, often understand the AI-doped IoT) via PCs and smartphones.

Two figures for a strategy

Some figures have been announced as well. Microsoft estimates that there will be about 20 billion smart devices in the world in 2020 - we understand better the stakes of the presence of the American giant on the edge of the cloud, and the partnerships signed with DJI, for more intelligent drones, or with Qualcomm, especially for a surveillance camera with facial recognition features.

The other strong figure is the 700 million devices running Windows 10. In 2015, the publisher planned to be present on one billion devices by 2018. Visibly the goal is not achieved , nevertheless, the figure is considerable if one thinks that no smartphone does not come to boost these results.

If Windows is not as large as expected, Microsoft's strategy makes the differential less worrying. Because the OS is now only one more platform, a service that connects with other ecosystems: iOS, Android, etc.

Your phone ... on your PC

The application for Windows 10, called Your Phone, fits perfectly in this trend. It allows you to connect your smartphone to your PC and send SMS, exchange photos between the two devices or receive notifications from the mobile device on the computer. No more need to grab his phone when working on his PC ...

The application that will run on iOS and Android will of course offer many more functions under the OS of Google. This is not unlike the Handoff initiated by Apple between macOS and iOS.

Your Phone should be accessible to Insiders as early as this week. Depending on the returns, the application will be integrated into Windows 10 or abandoned. During its build, Microsoft should give more details about this app and its operation.

Chronology, traveling in "your" time, even on iPhone

It was the big novelty of April Update. Chronology, aka Timeline in English, can go back up to thirty days in your activity, to find a document in PowerPoint, for example. Users of Edge for iOS, the Microsoft browser on the Apple mobile OS, had to realize that it is possible to access its PC browsing history via Timeline from their smartphone as long as they are connected to their Microsoft account.

By the end of the year, Edge for iOS should allow access to the entire Chronology from his iPhone or iPad.

Android is not left out

If the basic Timeline features do not seem to be coming soon on Android, Google's operating system is not put aside. Thanks to the Microsoft Launcher, already available but will be updated, it should be possible to benefit from some of the features of Chronology and also manage the application launch on multiple devices. Microsoft has not given more details for now but could do so by the end of the build, May 9.
