Chased from the Play Store, these malwares are back ... after a name change

Dozens of fake apps have recently been detected by security researchers. Some of them had already been banned by Google, but the hackers simply changed their names to republish.

The Google App Store continues to be gangrened by fake apps. Security researchers have recently detected dozens of Android apps that, under the cover of commonplace functionality, carries out malicious activities such as displaying advertisements or redirecting to scam sites.

Symantec researchers have just detected seven applications that have already been banned by Google and that hackers have again published on the shop under a slightly different name. It is amazing that the web giant did not realize it because the hackers did not even bother to modify the code.

Click fraud, traffic fraud

These applications come in the form of a small utility (emoji keyboard, calculator, recorder ...). Once installed, they solicit administrator privileges by posing as an official Google service. From there, they start flooding the user with unsolicited content.

The same researchers also found 38 more or less similar operating applications. Once installed, they gently load web pages with the aim, probably, to inflate their traffic.

For its part, security researcher Lukas Stefanko has detected 15 apps on Google Play, able to download additional code and display invisible ads for the user.

The same advertising fraud is at work in 25 applications analyzed by Sophos Labs researchers. The malicious activity was camouflaged in photo editing apps. All of these apps have since been removed from the Google Play store.
