EasyMesh, the standard for making meshed Wi-Fi networks interoperable

Wi-Fi Alliance launches a new certification that will mix the routers of one with the access points of others. It remains to be seen if the manufacturers are inclined to this opening.

Wi-Fi mesh networks are very convenient for extending the connection coverage and some of you may already be using them at home, through such offers as Google WiFi or Netgear Orbi.
The problem is that all these technologies are proprietary. You can not connect the access point of one with the router of the other. The Wi-Fi Alliance wants to change this reality and launches a new certification standard, Wi-Fi Certified EasyMesh, that makes these solutions interoperable. If Google and Netgear adhere to it, for example, users will be able to mix the network equipment of both manufacturers within a single mesh network.

This standard is purely software and can therefore be integrated into the firmware of existing equipment. It relies on the interaction of two entities: the controller and the agents. The first is typically run on the router and aims to establish in real time the best possible configuration of the network, whether in terms of switching from one router to another, the topology, the load distribution or communication channels.


To achieve this, the controller will rely on agents who, installed on the various access points, will provide all the necessary metrics data (available speed, number of terminals connected, Wi-Fi classes used, etc.).
Agents will also apply the topological decisions of the controller, such as creating different connection paths or transferring a terminal from one access point to another, for balancing purposes. The interconnection of EasyMesh agents can be done through 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi links, or via Ethernet links.


It remains to be seen if the industry will follow. For now, no manufacturer has announced its participation in this certification program. But we must remain optimistic.
As The Verge points out, EasyMesh only defines how controllers and agents communicate with each other. The main added value remains in the hands of the suppliers, namely their ways of finding the best possible configuration of the network. Each will keep its optimization algorithms, but it can apply them with the access points of others.
In addition, manufacturers have so far opted for different material and technical biases. Netgear relies heavily on its know-how in terms of good size antennas and the use of modules that support three frequency bands. While Google has used its mastery of algorithms and artificial intelligence to optimize the transmission and reception of radio waves.
These different paths will continue to create differences and possible compatibility limitations. Thus, an Orbi mesh router and its Google counterpart can form a network between them, but it will not be as efficient as a router and an Orbi satellite. He must always pay attention to his choice when getting equipped. Nevertheless, this standardization is welcome, making interoperable offers may be good news for the end user.

Especially since manufacturers who believe they have good mesh technology will be well advised to adopt this standard. It will allow them to become involved in the mesh networks of others.
