Exclusive: discover in images the new MSI ultrafine gaming laptop

It's one of the flagship laptops in MSI's Spring-Summer 2018 collection. The GS65 Stealth Thin is part of the new ultrafine wave meeting the Nvidia Max-Q standard. We received it in exclusivity.

While we are finalizing the tests, we have not been able to resist the urge to show you the latest MSI creation, the GS65 Stealth Thin. An ultra-slim and attractive portable PC whose core business is ... gaming!

Just like last year's Asus Zephyrus, or the latest Gigabyte Aero 15X, the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin is a member of the Nvidia Max-Q family of machines. An appellation launched by the GPU designer just over a year ago on the occasion of the last edition of Computex.

He tries to blend in with the decor

"Stealth" means in English "discreet" or "stealth" ... but recognize that it would be a crime not to proudly flaunt this 15.6 inch machine as it is successful. The Taiwanese manufacturer has not always accustomed us to such a level of finish ... and deserves congratulations.


The GS65's housing is constructed of thick, heavy-duty, dark-colored aluminum alloy that is reassuring in hand. A bronze-colored border runs around the back of the screen and echoes several elements of the machine (logo, outline of the hinges of the screen, side vents).


Once the GS65 is on the scale, the needle reads 1.85 kilograms. Not bad. And the thickness measured by us is 2.2 cm. Better and better ! Neither too thin nor too thick (easy!), What allow MSI to place a cocktail of connectors (USB Classic, USB Type-C, Thunderbolt 3, HDMI etc.) on the sidewalls to connect an external mouse or a possible second screen if that of the machine is not enough for you.


The GS65's display follows the current trend: very fine top and side edges, measured at 1.2 and 0.5 cm respectively. The coating of the slab is of course dull. This one opts for a Full HD definition and IPS display technology. Its refresh rate is 144 Hz (against 60 normally) and according to our first test results, the rendering is rather good in both games and movies. However, we thought we detected a slight lack of brightness. To be confirmed during the final test.
The GS65 is adorned with a SteelSeries keyboard. It has large buttons whose backlight color can be set to the desired. And occupies pretty well the internal tray.

The touch and the stroke of the keys are pleasant for both text entry and long gaming sessions. It is also appreciated that MSI has thought to implement four physical keys for the functions "Page before" or "Delete." Why ? Because they can be easily assigned to commands in play whereas, on many laptops, these functions are only accessible by associating the key FN and one of the F1 to F12, impractical to use in the fire of the action.

Six hearts and a 1070 Max-Q to play well


Under the keyboard, the horses! Our test version (8RF-046FR at 2700 euros) offers a totally up-to-date configuration with a Core i7-8750H processor whose six hyperthreaded cores mobilize their power (2.2 to 4.1 GHz) to run the games and the software of your choice.

For pure 3D, the GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q meets this. It is certainly less powerful than a classic GTX 1070 but still allows to play in Full HD without having to make too many concessions on the levels of detail. A proof ? Our test games The Division and Rise of The Tomb Raider are worry-free, with average frame rates of 65 to 90 frames per second using rather muscular house profiles.
