Face ID: the next iPhone could be even more secure
No more masks to trick the iPhone, goodbye the risk of seeing a twin or a family member unlock his phone. Apple has patented a technology that greatly improves the security of its devices.
For Apple, the future of biometrics definitely seems to be moving away from our fingerprints. With the iPhone X, Tim Cook's teams have tipped the user into the world of facial recognition, supposed to be much safer and more difficult to circumvent.
Nevertheless, some facetious hackers managed to deceive the TrueDepth camera of the latest iPhone. Similarly, the iPhone X is in fact not always able to tell the difference between two identical twins.
Tomorrow, it may be more difficult to play Face ID, according to a patent, discovered by Apple Insider, filed by Apple in November 2015. The document describes a system that can detect the network of facial veins of the skin. the user with an infrared transmitter / receiver, like the one on the iPhone X.
How it works ? According to the patent, the transmitter transmits several pulses of infrared light to the face (or hand) of the person who wishes to authenticate. The infrared beam passes through the skin and reflects the veins of the user. This information is then sent back to the infrared sensor. A chip then generates a map of the blood vessels of the face. The tiny differences in delay in the return of light make it possible to build a 3D model of the face.
This system, which creates an in-depth authentication profile, greatly complicates the task of counterfeiters. It seems very difficult to reproduce the arrangement of the veins under the skin to successfully unlock an iPhone. The current Face ID system, with its false positive rate of one in a million, would still be safe. Indeed, if twins are similar to the naked eye, their blood vessels can not be perfectly identical.
It is obvious that this patent does not mean that Apple will apply this technology. Nevertheless, this system seems pretty close to what is already in place. We can hope that Cupertino engineers will succeed in integrating it into the next generation of iPhone.
