Facebook will experiment with its wireless connection system as fast as fiber

With Terragraph, Facebook wants to connect entire neighborhoods with very high speed without having to deploy the fiber. However, the competition looks very tough for this low-end system.

Terragraph finally on the rails. Facebook will test next year its wireless system supposed to connect to the network an entire district or office building, with speeds of the order of 20 to 30 Gbits / s. Qualcomm's marketing director, Jesse Burke, announced it, explains PC World.

Facebook will indeed use a millimeter wave technology on the 60 GHz band provided by Qualcomm. It is neither more nor less 802.11ay, successor of 802.11ad. Rather than pulling a fiber that requires a lot of public works, a transmitter can send the signal remotely.

A weak reach

The system, however, has a major flaw: its range is only 10 to 30 meters. Its mesh must therefore be very narrow, even at the scale of a single neighborhood. It excludes de facto the connection of an entire city. For now, the experiment will be conducted in districts of Budapest in Hungary and Kuala Lumpu in Malaysia.

However, we can doubt the relevance of the technology used here. Rare are those of this style that worked, both the deployment of Wi-Fi at the scale of a city that the WiMax, promising, but finally quickly abandoned in the year 2000. Especially, Terragraph will have much to do with another major competitor whose future is already ensured: the 5G is already beginning to be experienced, especially in France.
