Futures Nvidia GeForce: a focus on rumors and early numbers

It's been two years since Nvidia's GeForce Series 10s are used in laptops and desktops. Players are demanding new and rumors about the hypothetical next generation GeForce are going well.

When will the next generation of Nvidia graphics cards for the general public? The GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 blew their second candle a few days ago and, for the moment, Nvidia is not showing signs of wanting to replace them with new generation models.
Yet, rumors and fantasies fuel more and more speculation on the Web, both in the forums and through articles on specialized sites.

GTX Series 11 and not Series 20

The latest rumors speak of a graphic chip of about 400 mm2 (314 mm2 for the chip of the 1080), on which one would find the Turing architecture engraved in 12 nm.
For the moment, this architecture does not officially exist in the Nvidia catalog, unlike Volta, the super architecture for the pros, officiating on the Titan V for example or within specialized stations or servers (automotive, Deep Learning / IA or RTX).

Some other rumors speak of a second architecture - Ampere - which is not official at Nvidia and could also be used on graphics cards.
This one, like Turing by the way, could and / or would be a variation of Volta. And if each was specialized for a market segment or, better, a type of machine?

For example, Turing could end up in desktop PCs and Ampere, under the keyboard of our laptops. Or vice versa. All this is only conjecture of course and is therefore to take with pincers. Tweezers would not be enough here.

At present, denominational side, a priori, no question of GeForce GTX 20 but of GeForce GTX 11, and GTX 1180 and 1170 to be precise. Not really a surprise according to the nomenclature standards used by Nvidia.

Figures and unofficial features

The Turing chip of the first two GeForce could be called GT104 (again, no surprise when we know the habits of the American society). The two cards would carry respectively 3584 (1180) and 2688 (1170) CUDA Cores (execution units). On the operating frequencies side, the rumors evoke between 1.5 and 1.6 GHz and spikes at 1.8 GHz in Turbo mode (GPU Boost). That is - substantially - what the current Pascal chips of the 1070 and 1080 offer.

Not surprisingly, the size of the memory bus would be 256 bits on both cards, only the amount of GDDR6 (against GDDR5 or GDDR5X today) would vary between 8 and 16 GB. What offer bandwidths ranging from 384 to 512 GB / s according to the most optimistic. Or dreamers, to choose.

In terms of consumption, according to rumors or first estimates, the new GeForce would remain in the same waters as the old: 140-160 watts for the 1170 and 170 to 200 watts for the 1180.

With all these speculative elements, how much does it make us TFLOPS under the hood? About 13 TFLOPS (FP32) for the 1180 (8.9 for the 1080) and 9.75 TFLOPS for the 1170 (6.75 for the 1070).

Thus, according to these first projections (still to be taken with pincers), the potential GTX 1170 could come to position between a GTX 1080 and a 1080 Ti while the GTX 1180, for its part, would be much more powerful than the current one. .. Titan Xp!


When and at which price (s)

The pricing speculations, they evoke positions substantially identical to those of the GeForce Series 10 at launch, namely $ 500 for the 1170 and $ 700 for the 1180. Same price for more power, good news from our point of view . If however this is true in the coming weeks.

Most optimistic Nvidia could briefly present the new graphics cards at its conference Computex, the famous Taiwanese trade fair to be held from June 5 to 9 in Taipei. However, this would only remain an appetizer to wait patiently impatient.

The official launch, it would likely to occur in the course of the summer. Some are betting on mid-July, while others think it's at the GamesCom Cologne (August 21-25) that the GPU designer will unveil his arsenal.

In addition, this launch could be done in conjunction with the 65-inch 4K gaming display, the Big Format Gaming Display, announced at CES 2018 and promised for the summer. What better than beautiful screens and / or a video game show to launch gaming equipment?
