Gmail now offers a native offline mode

A few clicks are enough to enable download and local synchronization of recent messages received or sent. Until now, this was only possible through an extension.

As promised, Google has launched a new feature convenient for Gmail users: offline. It had been announced a few weeks ago, in the wake of the launch of the new version of Gmail. As its name suggests, it allows access to messages even if there is no Internet connection. Convenient when you have a long flight and a ton of emails to read.

This mode is only available since the new version of Gmail and works only with the Chrome browser, as explained in this Google support page. To activate it, click on the small gear in the top right and select "Settings" and "Offline".

After checking the box "Enable offline messaging", you will be able to make some adjustments. Thus, you will be able to download the messages of the last 7, 30 or 90 days. You will be able to choose whether to download the attachments. Finally, you can choose between permanent local storage or ephemeral. In the second case, the mail client will resynchronize with each new connection, which may take some time.


To disable the offline mode, you must uncheck the box "Enable offline email" and delete the data saved by Chrome. To do this, go to the Hamburger menu of the browser and select the "Settings" menu, then go to "Advanced Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Clear Browsing Data". You must select "Cookies and other site data" and choose "All periods" and finally click on "Clear data". Note that enabling the offline mode is much easier than disabling.


This is not the first time that Google offers an offline mode for email, but this is the first time this feature is integrated natively. Until now, you had to use a Chrome extension. It's now more convenient like that.

Google has also activated the Smart Compose feature, which suggests to the user words and replicas based on context. But for now, this feature is only available in English.
