Google is backing up the audio blocking of ads in Chrome

The audio blocking of ads has been partially canceled by Google. Blame some applications and web games that would be victims. Some people think that it would not have pleased the advertising network of the company.

Has Google just admitted an error? One of its product managers, John Pallet, has announced that Chrome will partially and temporarily cancel the feature to block the audio track of video ads set to autoplay. This feature appeared last April with version 66 of Google's browser.

The explanation would come from the fact that this new process also blocks the audio of web applications or online games. According to Google, the fault lies with developers who have still not updated some of their creations. John Pallet also said that the feature will make its full return next October with Chrome 70. In the meantime, developers will refer to a document that allows them to align their work with the recommendations of Google.

Technical error or internal conflict?

This reverse, as organized as it is, however, looks like a mini fiasco from Google. The company announced this feature in September 2017. It was only released in April 2018 in Chrome 66 before being removed today, only a few weeks later. If she is really back in version 70, it will be one year after her first announcement.

Beyond a technical failure, should we see there the sign of a war internal to Google? There is no doubt that any attack on the viewing of commercials should not really appeal to the management of the company that brings in 98% of its revenues. But faced with the rise of ad blockers, Google has no choice but to offer an equivalent feature that he directly controls.
