Here is the world's smallest autonomous drone

Researchers have managed to embark artificial intelligence-based guidance on an aircraft of a size of a sub-bock. A world first.

Allowing a drone to fly completely autonomously is difficult. But doing it on a drone weighing only 27 grams is even more so. A group of researchers from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and the University of Bologna, however, achieved this feat. They managed to embark an independent, artificial intelligence-based guidance system on an aircraft that is ten centimeters wide, the size of a sub-bock. In this case, this drone is based on the Bitcraze provider's Crazyflie 2.0 development platform.

According to the researchers, this is the first time such a small drone has such a complete technology. There were already drones of similar size flying autonomously, but until now the guidance calculation was always deported to a PC that was in permanent communication with the drone. In this case, all the calculations are done directly on the aircraft. This was not an easy task, because the neural networks used by researchers are rather greedy energy.


To achieve this, the researchers created a computing platform called GAP8. Based on the RISC-V open source chip, it allows you to perform calculations on eight cores in parallel while consuming very little energy. The power required to run the software system is thus only 94 mW on average, which represents less than 1% of the total power of the machine. Indeed, the majority of energy is consumed by the engine and electronics.

According to the researchers, these perfectly autonomous little drones could be particularly useful for the Internet of Things, playing the role of flying sensors. Even if the duration of flight is for the moment still reduced ... to 7 minutes.
