How autonomous car designers work together to fix bugs

Eight companies involved in the design of autonomous vehicles in the United States shared with the motor vehicle regulatory agency the concerns encountered during testing. Collective action to identify faster the main flaws of embedded technologies.

More than 50 companies are licensed to conduct autonomous vehicle testing in the United States. The Mercury News reports that eight of them have been approached by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Motor Vehicle Regulatory Agency responsible for vehicle registration and driver's licenses, to share their reports after the tests. The eight companies are: Baidu USA LCC, Delphi Automotive, Drive.ai, GM Cruise, Nissan, Telenav, Waymo and Zoox. The opportunity for the agency to aggregate important information on the difficulties encountered by these vehicles on the road.

From Positioning Error to Bad Signaling Reading

The various reports shared by these companies, some of whose history dates back to December 2016, report common bugs. Starting with the way the vehicle perceives its environment. Common difficulties for autonomous cars to understand what happens when they are surrounded by many pedestrians, for example. The absence or poor legibility of marking on the ground is also a problem for these cars that use GPS data, but also cameras to position themselves on the road.

On these reports made by the eight companies, it can be read, for example, that Baidu (the Google Chinese) has encountered problems reading some traffic lights that he describes as "badly classified". Baidu also reports late braking problems following a "fishtail" by another vehicle, but also facing a pedestrian who has appeared in front of the car.
For its part, the company Telenav, which works on the technologies of connected vehicles indicates, among others, that it identified difficulties on the maintenance of the distances of security or the realization of the maneuvers of parking.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, said that it has software and hardware issues in its SDC diagnostic tools, as well as on cameras and lidars. Waymo points out, however, that at no time was there a risk of collision.
Finally, GM Cruise and Delphi have pointed out difficulties for autonomous vehicles to react to unkind behavior on the part of other motorists.
All of these examples are not exhaustive. Reports are available on the DMV website. Not all companies report the number of kilometers traveled. Nissan, which is among those delivering the most information, indicates that the tests have been conducted since December 2016. Tests during which, according to the report, the operator installed in the autonomous vehicle had to regain control 24 times of a total of approximately 8058 km (5007 miles) traveled on public roads. A good performance since these are tests conducted on roads open to traffic.
