HTC announces the U12 +, a new high-end smartphone ... transparent!

Contrary to its name, the HTC U12 + is the only high-end smartphone of the Taiwanese brand this year.

Since its partial purchase by Google this summer, HTC had no longer launched a new high-end smartphone. Some imagined that the brand would gradually fade in favor of Google Pixel, but HTC has always said it will not disappear anytime soon. Promised thing, thing due: the Taiwanese today unveils the HTC U12 +, a high-end smartphone marketed in June for 799 euros.

Always more pressure

With the U11, HTC had invented "Squeeze", a pressure system on the slices of the smartphone to activate features. By squeezing his smartphone with his hand, you could for example launch Google Assistant or trigger the camera. An interesting system (but often called a gadget) which also has the Pixel 2.

With the U12 +, HTC outbid and offers new shortcuts, such as the ability to double tap on the edge of his smartphone with his thumb to launch an application. Depending on the disposition of your fingers, the smartphone guesses how you hold it to disable the automatic rotation of the screen when necessary. Everything has been optimized so that the device can be used with one hand, and for good reason: only a large version of 6 inches is proposed. The U12 + is not a larger version of a U12, but the only model in the range.

A transparent back to compensate for a high price

Inside the HTC U12 +, there are all the features of a high end smartphone 2018. Processor Snapdragon 845, 6 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal memory (expandable by Micro SD) ... The smartphone is certainly part some of the most powerful in the market. We regret, however, the use of a LCD panel rather than OLED, and the presence of too large borders at the top and bottom. The screen is in the format 18: 9 and not 19: 9, and ignores the notch in passing.

On the back, the HTC U12 + is much more attractive. Available in three colors, including a "Ceramic Black" could not be more classic, the smartphone is distinguished by two versions much more original. The "Flame Red" alternates between red and gold depending on the viewing angle, and the "Translucent Blue" is transparent and lets us discover the bowels of the device.

On the side of the device, no physical button: HTC uses haptic feedback to simulate a pressure. A practical tip that should reduce the breakdowns of this kind of parts, particularly subject to wear. The stereo speakers of the device seem to be of very good quality.

A camera to beat all records?

In photo quality, the U11 impressed us. The work of HTC on the camera had paid off, and had allowed the brand to take the lead in our ranking of the best photophones. The Pixel 2, unavailable in France, is also considered one of the best photophones.

Without revealing too much, HTC promises that the U12 + should also break records at its release. Equipped with a dual camera module 12 Mpix and 16 Mpix (Telephoto dedicated to portrait mode), HTC hopes with this device to reiterate the achievements of last year.
