Huawei Porsche Mate RS: when Apple receives a design lesson

The screen of the Huawei Porsche Mate RS has no "notch". In an interview, the Porsche Design Manager explains this choice.

In March 2018, Huawei held a conference to present his P20, P20 Pro and P20 Lite. But besides this series of smartphones quite daring, a less mainstream model has also been unveiled: the Huawei Porsche Mate RS.
A very high-end model that has the particularity to do without the famous notch, which is however a new trend of the market to extend more and more the surface of the screen. Why ?
A luxury smartphone, a design lesson

Every year, Huawei teams up with Porsche Design to create an ultra-premium smartphone. Sold at 1,695 euros for its 6 GB version of RAM and 256 GB of storage and 2 095 euros for the model with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB, the Porsche Mate RS is not within the reach of all budgets!
In an interview with DigitalTrends, Christian Schwamkrug, head of design for Porsche since December 1987, explained this absence. A choice that, for him, perfectly meets the philosophy of the company.
The director of the Porsche Design Studio is very clear, the notch is the opposite of Porsche's conception of design. Take the famous quote from Ferdinand Porsche: "If you think the function of an object, its shape becomes obvious. "By applying this rule to smartphones and especially to their screen, it is true that the notch spot:

"When I saw a notch for the first time, I almost did not believe it. It's so disturbing from a design point of view, "says Schwamkrug.
A screen displays videos and photos and can not truncate what needs to be seen. In addition to the functional aspect, Porsche defends a symmetrical design: "an image is either square or rectangular, with a border and a very clear format. I like symmetry. We did not want the notch, we think it's a compromise. The symmetry also materializes with the alignment of the three sensors placed vertically in the center of the rear face of the Mate RS.

What Porsche wants, Porsche gets. The Mate RS does not include a notch. Nevertheless, this device has a small quirk: a double fingerprint reader. The first is placed at the back under the photo sensors and the second at the front, under the glass slab.
Note that this is the first smartphone sold internationally that offers this new technology. A sophisticated smartphone, with a strict design line and cutting-edge technology ... the Huawei Porsche Mate RS is a luxury smartphone born from the experience of a master in his field, who has been around for many years and can afford to give some design lessons.
