Intel does not engrave its processors in 10 minutes before ... 2019

Despite three years of delay, the processor giant remains confident in the superiority of its manufacturing processes and the strength of its ecosystem of technologies.

There was a time when Intel's ads put forward its dominance in terms of gigahertz and fine engraving in nanometers. These two pages are now shot. Intel is still working to improve the frequencies and finesse of engraving but he puts forward other benefits, especially because the race for numbers is no longer to his advantage.

In terms of fine engraving, Intel has lost the leadership of ads for some time now, and the US giant has announced that the first processors engraved in 10 nm will not arrive in late 2018 but in 2019. And when we say 2019, Intel refuses for the moment to specify if this launch will take place in the first or second semester. However, if we look at the side of the announcements of other founders, we see that Samsung and TSMC have far exceeded Intel's fine engraving side ... announced.

"It should be noted that Intel already produces processors in 10 nm that we deliver to our partners in small quantities," says one at Intel France. These chips are intended for manufacturers of motherboards, PCs, etc. who are preparing the machines to come. "The delay we have taken comes from the performance problems of the manufacturing process that we have identified and are working on. The launch of the mass production of several million chips will take place in 2019 ", continues one at Intel. Before stating "that comparisons between different manufacturing processes are difficult: when the competition speaks of minimal etching in the chip, we are talking about maximum distance between the transistors." Clearly, when Samsung talks about a 10-nm engraving, the Korean smelter communicates on the minimum spacing between two transistors that can go up to 10 nm ... but with parts of the chip engraved more roughly. At Intel "some parts of our circuits are engraved more finely, but we only communicate on the maximum spacing".

Difficult to actually compare ... but it does not prevent that Intel has lost a psychological advantage.

Three years behind ARM threat

Why be interested as much in the engraving fineness of the processors at Intel? For two reasons: on the one hand Intel was, until recently, the best of the industry in the miniaturization of transistors and the cap of 10 nm was announced for 2016, which will still be 3 years behind . Then, even if there are more and more limits, burning a processor as finely as possible makes it possible to improve the performances (more calculation units) and / or to limit its energy consumption.
In the face of the ramp-up of ARM chips, which are natively more efficient in power consumption, the slowing down of Intel chip enhancements further reinforces the threat of replacing x86 chips in computers, as rumors regularly mention at Apple. example.

A competition that does not seem to scare Intel, yet recently outclassed by Samsung as a leader in semiconductors. "We take all competitions seriously, but we are confident not only in our manufacturing processes, but also in our ecosystem of technologies," says Intel. "Our 14 nm ++ burning mode offers 70% more performance compared to the first 14 nm mode that we launched and this mode is equivalent or even better than the 10 nm of our competitors," insists Intel.

Diversification, confident stock market and record results

We could tax the Californian company with arrogance or too much confidence if the financial results were not there. But even if competitors are progressing, Intel enjoys its highest market listing for 18 years (since the bursting of the Internet bubble of the year 2000) and its financial results are more than adequate since the company has exceeded expectations in the last quarter.

Intel would be untouchable? Not at all, the three years of delay on the initial planning speak for themselves. But contrary to what is announced by many Cassandra, Intel, although slow to relax, begins to shift his attention and investment in the automobile or 5G, areas "where the mere announcement of the finest etching does not is useless: it is the quality of the complete offer of components and software solutions that matter, "says Intel France.

Clearly, we can make the figures speak as we want and write disaster scenarios, but the current results prove that Intel is not asleep. Far from there.
