iPhone 2018: a giant screen and three lenses encased in an iPhone 8 Plus case?

Analyst predictions and rumors are becoming more and more numerous. The next iPhone could embark three photographic modules and integrate a gigantic screen in the equivalent of an iPhone 8 Plus.

The prototyping season of the iPhone cuvée 2018 is in full swing and, logically, the leaks, rumors and predictions of analysts are beginning to proliferate about smartphones that Apple will unveil next September.

A giant screen in a compact housing

For some months now, everything has tended to indicate that Apple will introduce three smartphones in 2018, as it did in 2017. Two iPhone respectively benefit from an OLED screen of 5.8 and 6.5 inches, while the third (positioned at the entry level) would display a 6.1 inch LCD.

According to the Japanese blog Mac Otakara, which has caused many leaks, information from the assembly lines of the future iPhone would indicate that Apple intends to bring the screen 6.5 inches in a housing with dimensions almost identical to those of the iPhone 8 Plus.
That would mean that the so-called iPhone X Plus, for lack of another name, would reiterate the power of the iPhone X, offering an even larger edge-to-edge screen, without much increase the general size of the device. For the record, the 8 Plus currently offers a 5.5 inch screen and is 15.84 cm high, 7.81 cm wide and 0.75 cm thick.

According to Mac Otakara, the X Plus could be a bit thicker, 0.2 mm. A tiny difference that would allow the integration of a different rear photo module.

An improved Face ID

In addition, the iPhone 5.8 and 6.5 inches, equipped with OLED screens, therefore, would be expected to take advantage of the second generation of technology Face ID. It would have the main advantage of operating in different positions, without the user systematically needing to align his face with the device.

It seems that this improvement is related to iOS 12. The new mobile operating system would introduce a new facial recognition algorithm that would work even horizontally. However, it is not clear whether this improvement would be compatible with the current iPhone X.

A third photo module

Finally, the latest prediction comes from the company Yuanta Securities and its analyst Jeff Pu. According to him, Apple should introduce an iPhone with a triple camera module next fall. Jeff Pu does not go further in his description. It is therefore difficult to know if his information comes from specific sources or if he takes again the rumor appeared last month in a Taiwanese newspaper.

At the time, the newspaper reported a triple focal, with a zoom x5, without specifying whether it was optical, digital or hybrid. At present, the iPhone 8 Plus and X offers a 2x optical zoom and a 10x digital zoom, while the iPhone 8 offers a digital zoom (only) x5.

Thus, Apple would walk in the footsteps of other smartphone manufacturers, such as Huawei and its P20 Pro, which has a triple camera module. This would certainly offer a better optical zoom (x3, for example), improve the behavior of the iPhone in low light and possibly accelerate the focus.

Given the current build of iPhone ranges, it is likely that this third module is reserved for the high-end iPhone. This may be good news, however, if it means that the double module is likely to spread in the rest of the offer.
