iPhone X: Apple agrees to replace double rear photo sensor

Some devices have problems performing Face ID. In case of failure of a repair, the mark now authorizes the approved shops to replace the component.

Face ID, Apple's face recognition system, is the iconic feature of the iPhone X. But testimonials last week began to report difficulty of the device to identify faces. Although Apple has made no official comment on the subject, the brand takes the problem very seriously. The MacRumors site reports that the instructions are now given to Apple Store and approved suppliers to replace the double photo sensor, in case all other repair attempts have failed.

A minority of devices concerned

Here is an excerpt from the memo that is circulating:

"If a customer reports that their iPhone X has face identification problems, you may be able to resolve it with a repair from the rear camera. Run AST 2 on the client's device to check the camera. If the diagnostics conclude that there is a problem with the camera, perform the repair to see if the problem is resolved. If the problem is not resolved, perform a full replacement of the unit instead of a screen repair. "

Attention, only a minority of devices would be concerned. But there is a link between the dual camera module and the TrueDepth system at the front that captures the entire face. It remains to be seen why this is bugging Face ID.
