Kaspersky Lab moves to Switzerland to reassure and restore confidence
The publisher transfers customer data, source codes and compilation processes to a Swiss data center.
Accused by the United States of being an accomplice of the Russian secret services, Kaspersky Lab has been trying for months to restore trust with its customers. With relatively little effect, apparently. Yesterday, the Netherlands announced to follow suit in the United States and ban the security software at the government level for reasons of "national security".
However, the mass is not yet known and Kaspersky Lab intends to fight to the end. This is why the publisher has just announced the transfer of the "heart of its infrastructure" in Switzerland. By the end of the year, data from European, North American and some Asian countries will be stored and processed in a Swiss data center. The publisher also transfers its source codes, as well as its compilation and signature creation processes.
In the future, all Kaspersky's binaries will therefore come out of the Alpine country, with the exception of those intended for Russian customers for legal reasons. "In fact, there will now be two versions of Kaspersky software, one compiled and signed in Switzerland, and the other compiled and signed in Russia," says Tanguy de Coatpont, director of Kaspersky France. Why Switzerland? "It's a neutral country with very restrictive data hosting laws. This is a strong message sent internationally, "says the director.
Independent audit
In parallel with this technology transfer, Kasperky Lab announces the establishment of a "non-profit entity" whose mission will be to independently audit the source code and compilation processes in Switzerland. "We will soon select the trusted third party who will take care of this technical audit. This entity can also work for other publishers who wish to participate in this initiative, "explains Tanguy de Coatpont.
Finally, the publisher will open in Switzerland its first "transparency center" which will allow governments and large companies to carry out their own audits of the source code of Kaspersky Lab. "This makes us the most transparent cybersecurity company internationally. Nobody provides so much information, "says the director. The future will tell if this effort will be rewarded.
