LG launches G7 ThinQ: a beautiful and astute smartphone

The G7 ThinQ is the new flagship of Korean LG. Beyond an equipment (almost) irreproachable, he intends to pull out of the game thanks to artificial intelligence.

Unveiled in France at the Atelier des Lumières, a new exhibition center that combines art and digital, the G7 ThinQ is part of the trend of the moment. The new flagship of LG sports, indeed in an ultra compact housing a large screen of 6.1 inches QHD + definition (3120 x1440 points) for a high resolution of 563 dots per inch. A screen that adopts a 19.5: 9 format, all in length as the iPhone X or the Huawei P20, for fairly fine borders.

Hence the inevitable notch that includes the 8-megapixel front camera - used for selfies and face recognition - and one of the two speakers of the smartphone.



For the less packaged, LG provides a setting to "erase" this notch, inserting it in a "second screen" completely black, able to display notifications, like the P20 (see photo below ).

For the performance of its slab, the Korean has used the expertise of LG Display which provides for the first time a LCD M + technology screen. Assumed to achieve a high brightness 1000 cd / m², it would save up to 30% energy. What keep a good autonomy despite the very high definition screen and the Snapdragon 845 processor (the most powerful of the moment) that equip this G7? We look forward to testing this smartphone that embeds a fairly classic battery of 3000 mAh.


Despite edges that do not seem so thin visually, the G7's case is no wider or thicker than the LG G6 with a screen of only 5.7 inches. A diagonal close, the G7 is even less bulky than a Galaxy S9 + or a P20 Pro. It does not have, however, the curved edges of the Samsung smartphone that make its charm even if they are much less convenient to use a flat screen.

Photo: a good dose of AI

Despite its back glass, LG's new flagship should withstand the vagaries of life: it complies on the one hand with the MIL-STD 810G (for strength) and the IP68 (for sealing).
At the back of the smartphone, just above the fingerprint sensor, we discover a double photo module and a flash. The main focus (16 Mpix) opens at f / 1.6 and offers a portrait mode. The second is a wide angle (107 degrees) and opens at f / 1.9, with a sensor of 16 megapixels also.

an AI CAM mode (for artificial intelligence of the camera) can detect up to 19 different scenarios to automatically improve the photo quality (food, flower, city, etc.). It works on both sensors.

Beyond the opening at f / 1.6 of the main sensor that brings in more light to "light up" the darkest scenes, we can discover a "super bright camera" mode (enabled by default) for brighter pictures even in very dark environment.

here, the G7 takes a picture of the bottom of a black box (below) for a rather satisfactory result ... even if it does not seem to reach the sharpness of a low-light shot taken with a P20 Pro.

We have compared empirically (on the screen of the two smartphones) but we will have to wait for further tests to decide definitively. The G7 only has electronic stabilization, which could put it at a disadvantage.

A button to call Google assistant

No need to knock your smartphone off "Ok Google" repeatedly. The G7 thinQ has a button under the volume keys that allows you to query the wizard. A pressure, we ask his question. Two pressures, object recognition is launched. A maintained pressure, one can formulate several successive requests ... before releasing. The future will tell us users adhere to the principle.

Good news, in addition to a USB type-C, the G7 has a Jack! A second speaker brings the stereo to the smartphone and thanks to the Boombox Speaker system, the sound power is at the rendezvous. Better quality looks good. What to do without an external speaker? We will tell you in our future test!


The LG G7 ThinQ should be available, in blue, from the month of June at a price of 849 euros.
