Linux applications land on Chromebooks
Google is testing the execution of Linux applications in a virtual machine, in the latest beta version of Chrome OS.
At the Google I / O 2018 conference, Google made an announcement that will please all users of Linux applications. Indeed, future versions of Chrome OS will have a virtual machine to run them, previously known as the Crostini project.
Developers can now test this feature in the latest beta version of the operating system (Chrome OS 68). Just go to the settings of Chrome OS to activate it, provided you have a computer Pixelbook.
The main goal is to allow Linux developers to use a Chromebook as a work machine. Designed from a Debian system, the environment is appropriately named Penguin. Thanks to a "sandbox" system, it is totally secure and isolated from the rest of the system.
With the running of Android applications and now Linux, Chrome OS becomes a less closed system that could appeal to more users. However, Google did not indicate when the feature would be available in final version for all Chromebooks.
