Microsoft plans to launch low-cost Surface tablets again
The company no longer wants to leave the field open for the Apple iPad. A 10-inch Intel-based model is expected to be launched before the end of the year for a price around $ 400.
In the second half of the year, the Surface tablet family is expected to host a new entry-level model. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft plans to launch a 10-inch tablet with Intel chip, for a price around $ 400. Currently, the Redmond company offers only high-end tablets Surface Pro with a rate that, for the latest generation, oscillates between 949 euros (Intel Core m3 configuration and 128 GB) and 3099 euros (Intel Core i7 and 1 TB configuration) ), which is not compatible with all scholarships.
This is not the first time that the firm of Redmond wants to position itself in the segment of entry-level tablets. Since 2015, the company has tried unsuccessfully to gain a foothold with the successive models Surface RT, Surface 2 and Surface 3. The production of the latter was stopped at the end of 2016. Since then, Microsoft has left the field open to Apple, which continues to offer tablets at much more competitive prices. The latest generation is available from 359 euros. It allows the Cupertino company to target, among other things, the specific market of education.
Lighter than a Surface Pro, but less autonomous
With the next tablet, Microsoft will try to catch the bandwagon. According to Bloomberg, the new tablet will be 20% lighter than a Surface Pro, and should therefore end up with a weight around 600 grams. Its autonomy should be around 9 hours. It's still worse than the iPad, but it's getting closer.
The device would also benefit from a USB Type C interface and should be available in different variants, with 64 or 128 GB storage and Wi-Fi / LTE connectivity. The edges of the screen would also be more rounded than those of the Surface Pro. Finally, Microsoft should offer a series of accessories cheaper. Difficult indeed to associate with an entry-level device a stylus to 109 euros and a keyboard to 179 euros.
