Soon an Apple credit card?

In alliance with Goldman Sachs, Apple would like to introduce Apple Pay to a wider audience through a credit card. This could be available early 2019 in the United States.

By launching Apple Pay in 2014, Apple went to the forefront of the banking world with a promise: to make disappear credit cards. The company and its leaders dream of a world where everyone would pay with their smartphone, and where these little bits of plastic that we used as payment means would have disappeared.

Still, according to the Wall Street Journal, the brand's disdain for payment cards would not be so definitive. In early 2019, Apple and the investment bank Goldman Sachs could indeed ally to launch a credit card under the brand name "Apple Pay".

The shock of two worlds

Apple is a cool company, followed by millions of fans. Goldman Sachs is one of the largest investment banks in the world, better known for its recent scandals than for its ability to generate passion among its customers. Two companies that opposes everything, but that would have begun to flirt with it several months ago.

For Apple, allying with Goldman Sachs appears as an admission of failure. Available to more and more banks after a slow start, Apple Pay still does not really win and has not become the main payment solution for iPhone users. According to Loup Ventures, only 13% of them would have activated Apple Pay. Which remains huge given the number of owners of the device, but certainly not enough for Cupertino. With the support of Goldman Sachs, Apple Pay could be better known and reach a new audience. No doubt that a "physical" card will prompt to activate the service on his iPhone.

For Goldman Sachs, this "Apple Pay" card would be the first credit card launched by the company, whose business model depends on the stock market and not individuals. Joining with Apple would help to recruit a large number of customers, and to become known as a service company.

Promotions and funding?

In the United States, this partnership with Goldman Sachs would not be Apple's first with a bank. Since 2014, Barclays has been offering an "Apple Rewards" card offering a point system to redeem for gift cards, or more attractive financing offers on Apple products. If the partnership can end with the Apple / Goldman alliance, it would be interesting to know if these benefits will be extended with the Apple Pay card. The Wall Street Journal indicates that financing offers reserved for Goldman Sachs customers would indeed be planned.

Available early 2019 in the United States, the Apple Pay credit card could be quickly followed by other cards signed by other giants of the Tech. According to the Financial Times, Amazon would discuss with JPMorgan to get into the banking business. It remains to be seen whether these Apple or Amazon cards will land in France one day.
