Everyone knows the Boston Dynamics robots, breathtakingly fluid and fast, but also slightly disturbing in their humanoid shape or animal appearance. The acquisition of the company by the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank last year intrigued Boston Dynamics having devoted itself to research in partnership with the US military since its inception 26 years ago. A first answer has just been added to this riddle. Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert announces that the SpotMini robot will be marketed in 2019. A first for the company that has never sold its products in the civil.

Boston Dynamics also thinks in the short term

The news was revealed at an event organized by TechCrunch on May 11 in Berkeley. The timing is perfectly orchestrated since Boston Dynamics had just posted on YouTube the latest achievements of SpotMini and a major conference is planned at the Cebit trade show in Germany with Marc Raibert next month. We were not used to so much communication from a rather discreet society about the purpose of its work.

SpotMini was unveiled for the first time last year and has since featured in various videos where we have seen it open doors and more recently navigate an environment full of obstacles at Boston Dynamics headquarters. He is often compared to a dog because he is quadruped. It weighs about thirty kilos and has 90 minutes of autonomy. It is equipped with a multitude of cameras: two in the front, one in the back and one on each side. Its price is not yet known but it would be intended, initially, to be used only in offices. And why not, one day, by the general public in dwellings. It is currently entering the pre-production phase, the objective being to manufacture this year a hundred marketable copies in mid 2019.

On the stage of TechCrunch, SpotMini has appeared in a reference design version with a rather successful design and all black coated. Like a robot vacuum cleaner, it is able to map its environment and then move independently, with this more than it is able to go up and down stairs. Remote controlled by an operator, he engaged in a series of amazing movements by their precision and velocity, all without losing his balance.

A software and hardware platform

The problem is that Marc Raibert remains extremely vague about SpotMini applications which we learn however that it is designed as "a software and hardware platform". "We have developed a surveillance application that will rely on SpotMini cameras," said Marc Raibert. "An API will be open to third-party developers to develop their own applications," he added. In addition, the head of SpotMini can accommodate additional equipment.

Asked about the concrete applications of Boston Dynamics robots in general, Marc Raibert explained that Google was the first to push him to think about the issue. Softbank goes further by demanding both long-term and short-term projects, even for a machine as experimental as Atlas. Which does not mean that it is a question of marketing the impressive humanoid robot. "We use it to develop bricks of technology that can be applied to short-term things - for example, using both arms simultaneously to manipulate objects in a coordinated fashion with the body is something that can be applied to simpler machines ". Marc Raibert remains focused on the future. For him, something "bigger than the Internet" could happen thanks to the progress of robotics. A perspective that will take a long time but promises to revolutionize our lives.
