We tested five new generation SSDs to boost your laptop
Ultra-compact, the new M.2 SSDs benefit from the NVMe interface to pass the barrier of 600 MB / s. We tested for you five popular models.
2.5-inch SSDs are almost dead! M.2 models, especially those with an NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) interface. The latter eliminates the 600 Mb / s limit of the Serial ATA (SATA) interface currently used for hard disks integrated into consumer computers. Thus, M.2 NVMe SSDs are capable of delivering data rates greater than 3000 MB / s!
Ready-to-use SSDs
Their installation is very simple, because they are in the form of a small card (22 x 80 mm in general) to be inserted into a specific connector on the motherboard. A screw usually secures the SSD and you just have to ensure that the BIOS of the motherboard is compatible, which is generally the case on recent machines such as laptops or mini PCs. In addition, Windows 10 has the necessary drivers to support NVMe M.2 SSDs, although they may not be optimized.
Large differences in flow rates
We tested five M.2 NVMe models and found many performance gaps. These differences appear first in the bit rates and depend on the capacity (the larger it is, the faster the SSD is), the type of flash memory (the TLC memory is cheaper to produce and less fast than the MLC memory) , but also the size of the files. Thus, the best rates are obtained (see below) with the sequential reading and writing tests, which corresponds to the transfer of large files, for example videos. In this area, the WD Black NVMe SSD is sparking, followed by the Samsung 960 Pro.
Rate in MB / s of each SSD tested, depending on the type of use
We also used the AS SSD test to highlight the ability of SSDs to handle a large number of I / O operations, an important criterion for use in a multitasking environment (see table below). Measurements read with a single task, then with 64 tasks (64 Thrd) highlight the Optane technology that Intel uses in its 800P. We also note the good score of the Samsung 960 Pro in this event.

You have to download software
Manufacturers generally do not deliver software with their SSDs, but a search on their websites reveals that they are downloading a maintenance program, sometimes called a toolbox. Very practical, this program makes it possible to know the state of the SSD, to carry out a secure erasure and especially to update its firmware (microcode). This update is important because it fixes SSD bugs and can sometimes improve its performance.
Some vendors also offer data migration software (cloning) to easily transfer the entire hard disk (OS, applications, data) to the SSD.
Here are the five M.2 NVMe SSDs that we tested.
Samsung 960 Pro: our favorite
On paper, the 960 Pro is the most powerful SSD in the selection thanks to the use of Multi Level Cell (MLC) flash memory that stores two bits of data per cell. Thus, this model rises to 3446 MB / s read and 2124 MB / s write for the sequential test of CrystalDiskMark. It is also fast for the transfer of files of 4 KB. The use of MLC memory allows to offer a high endurance (800 TB written at least during the life of the SSD). Samsung takes care of the software offering by offering to download an SSD management program, optimized drivers and even an easy-to-use cloning tool to transfer Windows 10, apps and data.
Capacity tested: 1 TB
Other capacities available: 512 GB, 2 TB
Flash memory type: V-NAND MLC
Cache memory: 1 GB DDR3
Advertised speed: up to 3500 MB / s read and 2100 MB / s write
Stamina Announced: 800 TBW (To Writings)
Warranty: 5 years
Software to download: Samsung Magician, Samsung NVMe drivers, Data Migration Tool
Price: about 550 euros
Samsung 960 EVO: the best value for money
The 960 EVO is a good deal because it offers high data rates for large files (3422 MB / s read and 1751 MB / s write CrystalDiskMark), for a very reasonable price (190 euros for 500 GB). To achieve these results, Samsung implements a high performance cache system. In contrast, the use of Triple Level Cell (TLC), which stores three bits of data per cell, results in reduced endurance (only 200 TB written for the 500 GB version). Like the 960 Pro, the 960 EVO has a full software offering to download from the Samsung website, along with the Samsung Magician management program, optimized NVMe drivers, and a data cloning tool.
Capacity tested: 500 GB
Other capacities available: 250 GB, 1 TB
Flash memory type: V-NAND TLC
Cache memory: 512 MB DDR3
Advertised speed: up to 3200 MB / s read and 1800 MB / s write
Announced Endurance: 200 TBW (To Writings) for 500 GB and 400 TBW for 1 TB
Warranty: 3 years
Software to download: Samsung Magician, Samsung NVMe drivers, Data Migration Tool
Price: about 190 euros
Intel Optane SSD 800P
The SSD 800P is a stand-alone model because it uses Intel's Optane technology, as well as the XPoint 3D flash memory developed with Micron. Unfortunately this technology is expensive and Intel offers only two capacities for its SSD M.2, 58 GB and 118 GB, sold at high prices. It's a shame because the 800P offers good performance when compared to SSDs of equivalent capacity. In particular, it is very comfortable with small 4K files.
Capacity tested: 118 GB
Other capacity available: 58 GB
Flash memory type: 3D XPoint
Cache memory: nc
Advertised speed: up to 1450 MB / s read and 640 MB / s write
Announced Stamina: 365 TBW (To Writings)
Warranty: 5 years
Download Software: Intel SSD Toolbox
Price: around 250 euros
Kingston A1000
An entry-level M.2 NVMe SSD? This is what Kingston offers with its A1000 whose price is very attractive. Thus, the 480 GB model costs only 160 euros, which is rather a good deal. While performance is not exceptional for NVMe (1608 MB / s read and 1037 MB / s write measured with CrystalDiskMark), but they are still significantly higher than those of a SATA SSD. The A1000 SSD is delivered without software, but Kingston offers an activation coupon and download link to use the Acronis True Image HD cloning software.
Capacity tested: 480 GB
Other capacities available: 240 GB, 960 GB
Flash memory type: 3D TLC
Cache memory: nc
Advertised speed: up to 1500 MB / s read and 900 MB / s write
Announced Endurance: 300 TBW (To Writings) for 480 GB and 600 TBW for 960 GB
Warranty: 5 years
Software to download: Kingston SSD Manager, Acronis True Image HD
Price: about 160 euros (300 euros for 960 GB)
WD Black NVMe SSD
With the purchase of SanDisk, Western Digital now has expertise in storage systems based on flash memory. It offers under its brand WD a very powerful SSD, able to compete with the models of Samsung. Equipped with TLC flash memory, the Black NVMe SSD sparks in its 1 TB version and achieves read rates of 3442 MB / s sequential reading and especially 2855 MB / s sequential writing under CrystalDiskMark. It also gets good results for small files. You can download the SSD Dashboard management program from the manufacturer's website, as well as the famous True Image from Acronis to transfer the contents of your old hard drive.
Capacity tested: 1 TB
Other capacities available: 250 GB, 500 GB
Flash memory type: 3D TLC
Cache memory: 1 GB DDR3
Advertised speed: up to 3400 MB / s read and 2800 MB / s write

We're waiting for them: Samsung 970 EVO and 970 Pro
Samsung has announced the launch of its new M.2 NVMe models: the 970 EVO and 970 Pro. These models embark a new controller and a new generation of V-NAND flash memory. Thus, according to the manufacturer, the 970 Pro 1 TB achieves 3500 MB / s read and 2700 MB / s write. The 970 EVO 500 GB offers a maximum bit rate of 3400 MB / s read and 2300 MB / s write (2500 MB / s write for the 1 TB version).
