Why Uber's autonomous car killed a pedestrian

It was a fatal accident that temporarily put Uber's ambitions for autonomous cars at a standstill. On March 19, a woman who was walking with her bike on her side was overturned at 60 km / h by a driverless vehicle tested by Uber. She died of her injuries soon after. The Information site got wind of the company's internal investigation and concluded today that the software had detected the presence of a pedestrian but did not provide the appropriate response that would have been stop immediately.

The time of the accident, 22:00, has nothing to do with this error despite the penumbra. Neither the sensors that did their job well. This is a software problem related to decision-making, as the company that provides LIDAR to Uber is suspicious of. Designed not to take into account the false positives of the floating plastic bag type, the autonomous driving system would have taken a long time to interpret what kind of obstacle it was and would not have immediately dismissed the hypothesis of a false positive. Which was fatal for the woman.

Uber does not abandon his autonomous car project

The responsibility of the driver, who was present in case a problem occurred, would also be pointed out. He would not have watched the road carefully as was expected of him, so that he could regain control in the event of a problem.

Uber refuses to comment on these leaks because the NTSB investigation, the National Transportation Safety Council, is still ongoing. The company has decided to have an audit of its entire autonomous vehicle cell. But new leader Dara Khosrowshahi does not plan to abandon the project.

Since this tragic event, a Waymo car has been hit by a minivan, without having to deplore a serious injury and the responsibility of Google's system was put out of action. Another fatal crash has also involved a Tesla in automatic mode but the software's involvement has not been proven yet.
