Windows 10: we tested the update April 2018 Update

The major new release of Microsoft's OS brings exciting features related to activity history, privacy, and wireless file sharing.

This April 30, Microsoft launches the new major update of Windows 10, called April 2018 Update. Indeed, Windows is now considered by Microsoft as a service that changes every 6 months. As with the Fall Creators Update, released in October, deployment will take place in successive waves and may take a long time. In order to limit the compatibility problems, the most recent machines will be served first and it will sometimes be necessary to be patient to see the update on his computer. We tested the main new features of the April 2018 Update.

Chronology (Timeline)

Probably the most important feature of this new version of Windows 10. It allows to keep a history of its activities and resume a task where we stopped, for example reading a Web page with the Edge browser .

In addition, this history is common to all Windows machines that use the same Microsoft account, which allows you to start editing an image with Paint on your desktop machine, and then continue with your laptop if it has been saved to OneDrive. .
Timeline is currently limited to some basic Windows applications (Edge, Paint, WordPad among others), as well as Office, but Microsoft plans to extend it to all applications in its store and encourages developers to update their programs.

Privacy and security

Microsoft continues to offer new options to better control the private data you provide. First of all, it is possible to view the information sent to the editor using the diagnostic data viewer, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

The viewer gives the choice between a basic diagnosis and a more complete one, but beware, the information is complex to understand.

Convenient however: you can delete diagnostic data easily by clicking a button.

In the new controls, you can prevent Windows from sending information to Microsoft regarding handwritten input and input data.

Windows 10 also allows you to restrict application access to your documents, images, videos, or even the entire file system.

Finally, the various functions of the Windows Defender integrated security tool are now directly accessible in the system settings.

Proximity Sharing (Near Share)

Like AirDrop in iOS and macOS, this new feature lets you quickly share files or web links with another machine using a wireless link (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth). It is activated in the quick actions of the notification center, or directly in the applications, for example, Photos to send an image.

It is also available in the Edge browser to share a link, as well as in the file explorer (right-click on the file).

Edge

Microsoft is evolving its browser with the biannual version of Windows 10. Edge is gaining performance and is enriched with new features for reading eBooks in EPUB format with, in particular, the application of a dark theme.

The browser also allows you to put colors on nouns, verbs and adjectives, or even to separate words into syllables.

A backup feature is now available for free EPUB eBooks.

The browser allows to automatically fill out the forms, for example, an online order, with the choice in drop-down lists. Finally, the full screen mode (F11 key) now gives access to the address bar by placing the mouse at the top of the window.

Games

The Game Bar undergoes a small facelift to be more pleasant to use. Microsoft has made the choice between a light color and a dark shade.

Interface

Microsoft is continuing to move to Fluent Design (NEON project), which redefines the graphical interface, especially in the settings windows.
The editor also removes some functions from the old control panel, such as font management, which is now available within the OS settings.

The notification center is enriched with a new quick action called Concentration Assistant.

This mode allows you to select which notifications are displayed and which ones are blocked. You can set priority notifications or let only the alarms. The mode can also be activated at night (between 11 pm and 7 am), or during the use of a game. It is similar to the "Do not disturb" function of smartphones.

Other functions

Windows Hello is directly accessible in the lock screen, which allows you to quickly configure password replacement with a PIN or biometric authentication.

If your screen and graphics card are compatible with HDR video, Windows 10 has a new switch in its settings to enable streaming HDR video.

Finally, Microsoft has planned for a simpler pairing of Bluetooth devices but this feature did not work on our test laptop. The publisher has not yet specified whether this feature has been postponed or is only active for certain Microsoft devices.
