Mozilla wants to create an open source alternative to voice assistants from Google, Apple and Amazon
The foundation is creating an open source voice platform, based on artificial intelligence techniques and the contribution of volunteers around the world. French is already covered by this technology.
The multiplication of objects with voice assistants shows that the voice could become the new human-machine interface of importance. Mozilla, which has already missed the mobile train, intends to make a place for itself in this new area and deploys a strategy that is starting to take off.
In November 2017, the open source foundation launched DeepSpeech, a software platform for creating speech recognition systems based on deep learning algorithms. The architecture is inspired by a scientific paper from Baidu Research. The implementation is based on the Google TensorFlow open source platform for machine learning.
Everyone can directly participate online
All this artificial intelligence is useless if we do not have a stock of data with which we can feed it. This is why Mozilla has launched the Common Voice project concomitantly. Its goal is to create an open source linguistic corpus in as many languages as possible. It is powered by volunteers who add a large amount of written and spoken sentences and then match the two. Everyone can participate online, whether to integrate sentences or do the work of correspondence.
The first language covered by Common Voice was English. Three other languages have just entered the corpus, namely French, German and Welsh. Forty-three other languages are being acquired. There are national languages such as Hungarian, Russian or Irish. But also regional languages such as Breton, Cornish, Tamil, Chuvash or Telugu. To accelerate the creation of this corpus, Mozilla organizes events called "Common Voice Sprint" where volunteers meet for one or two to integrate linguistic elements.
With this dual project, both algorithmic and data, Mozilla wants to break in the bud the new oligopoly that is being formed around the voice assistants of Google, Amazon, Apple, etc. Currently, publishers who want to benefit from a voice interface for their applications have no real choice but to turn to these platforms. "We believe that these interfaces should not be controlled by a small number of companies that decide to give access to voice services or not. In addition, we want users to always be understood in their own languages or dialects (...) Indigenous languages provide a deeper shared cultural context, to the point of influencing our thought patterns. It's a part of our humanity that we absolutely want to keep and support with technology, "says Katharina Borchert, director of innovation at Mozilla, in a blog note.
