The United States unveils Summit, the world's most powerful supercomputer

With a computing capacity of more than 200 petaflops, this computer monster should allow the United States to regain the lead in the Top500 ranking of supercomputers, a position that China has held since June 2013.

Make America Great Again. Not sure that Donald Trump is there for much. In any case, five and a half years after being ousted by China, the United States should regain the top spot in the Top500 ranking of the most powerful supercomputers on the planet, updated every six months.
The next edition is scheduled for the end of the month and is expected to focus on "Summit", the new computing monster just introduced by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a research arm of the US Department of Energy.

Built by IBM, Summit consists of a network of 4,608 servers - also called compute nodes - each of which has two CPU Power9 to 22 cores, 6 Nvidia Tesla GPU V100 and more than 2000 GB of memory. The whole thing is interconnected by a 200 Gbps InfiniBand network, based on equipment from Mellanox Technologies.
This impressive infrastructure will achieve a computing capacity of more than 200 petaflops, or 200 million billion floating point operations per second.

That's 60% stronger than the Sunway TaihuLight, the Chinese supercomputer at the Wuxi National Supercomputing Center, which has been in the Top500 since June 2016 and was the first system to surpass 100 Petaflops. Previously, China led the dance with the Tianhe-2, which replaced Titan at the head of the pack in June 2013.
Titan was also a supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. "Unless the Chinese give us a surprise this month, this new system will ensure the United States returns to the top spot of the Top500," said Michael Feldman, general manager of Top500 rankings, in a blog note.

Summit will allow researchers to do astrophysical modeling calculations and better understand, for example, supernovas. It will also simulate the infinitely small in the search for materials. Health and the fight against cancer are also priorities. The United States does not intend to stop there. They plan to exceed the bar of the exaflops, or 1000 petaflops, by the end of 2021.
