IO 2018: Google muscle its augmented reality to catch up with Apple
A pioneer of augmented reality, Google was suddenly overtaken by its rival Cupertino. The ambition is now to make up for this delay by offering new uses to users and new tools for developers.
On the occasion of the Google I / O 2018, the US giant has unveiled the latest iteration of its new platform augmented reality. Launched last August only, ARCore (now version 1.2) is progressing rapidly, to avoid leaving the field open to Apple and its ARKit, which took the market by surprise last June.
Augmented reality for two is better
In addition to some minor changes, the engineers of the Mountain View giant have introduced three essential new features. The first one is called Shared AR Experiences.
As its name implies, it aims to allow two (or more?) Users to share an augmented reality experience. Whether it's positioning a new sofa in your living room or playing a bug with two smartphones.

This sharing is based on a technology called Cloud Anchors, which allows you to define the position of a virtual object in the real world, then share its location via a cloud connection with another smartphone. The good news is that all this should work on both Android and iOS.
AR takes on a new dimension
Second central point, Google follows the lead of Apple and its ARKit 1.5. Its augmented reality platform is now able to detect vertical surfaces. This allows you to no longer be confined to the ground and thus hang virtual tables in your living room or try a paint color on a wall.
This new feature also comes with another feature, Augmented Images. It offers the possibility to animate vertical surfaces. Thus, the side of a box on which is represented a castle will come alive. The drawbridge will be lowered, soldiers will come out, etc. If an app is designed for this, just place the box in the smartphone's camera frame and look at the screen.
Strengthen the offer
By launching its ARKit and making sure that a good part of the already active iDevices are compatible, Apple has put a colossal argument on the table to seduce the developers and therefore record a number of applications of augmented reality consequent.
To attract coders, Google has come to present a new tool Sceneform, which will accelerate the development of AR application for Java developers. App creators will be able to more easily develop animated 3D elements without having to learn to master complex APIs like OpenGL.
While waiting to have the sound of Apple, Google is clearly working hard for augmented reality, as evidenced by the upcoming integration of this technology in Maps, one of the flagship applications of the American giant.
