Nokia and Xiaomi enter the top 5 smartphone manufacturers in Europe

Canalys has unveiled smartphone sales figures for the first quarter of 2018 in Europe. Not surprisingly, Samsung is still the number 1 brand, but in light of the results, the reign of South Korea may well be threatened.

More than a year ago, Nokia was reborn from the ashes with HMD Global and Xiaomi started selling its products on our old continent. It is clear that their new involvement in the smartphone market has paid off: the two manufacturers are already in the ranking of the top 5 brands of smartphones sold in Europe. While Huawei is gaining some ground, Samsung and Apple are seeing their sales numbers drop.


The return of Nokia

The firm Canalys reveals indeed that the three usual biggest sellers (Samsung, Apple and Huawei) are still there. But it is those placed in fourth and fifth positions that deserve a little attention. Nokia has sold 1.6 million smartphones, giving it a 3.5% market share. The brand was not present last year over the same period, so it is impossible to calculate its growth. Anyway, Nokia has come back to the front of the stage. It's a safe bet that its strategy to offer Android smartphones stock is not foreign to its success.

The expansion of Xiaomi

As for Xiaomi, it's a different story. With 2.4 million smartphones sold, the Chinese company settles comfortably in fourth position. Its growth explodes the counters with an increase of more than 999%. However, this figure is to be taken with tweezers: apart from imports, Xiaomi was almost non-existent on the European market a year ago. It is therefore normal for the numbers to swell with his arrival. The latter should rise further as the company continues to expand in the West, particularly in France.

These two manufacturers take the place of LG and Sony who, unsurprisingly, suffer from not selling as many devices as in the past. Xiaomi and Nokia have some advantages, including a very good value for money. Nevertheless, the Canalys firm warns against this strategy. If, for the moment, it succeeds them, it is very likely that the situation is changing rapidly. To maintain their place in the long term and remain viable, Nokia and Xiaomi will have to revise their price upwards to align with Samsung, Apple and Huawei.
